Class notes: Summer 2014

1960s

’62 

Dr. James L. Casale ’62 of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., wrote a book, Wise Up: Be the Solution: Create a learning culture in your home and help your child succeed in school (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013). He is a former Florida Teacher of the Year and retired school administrator who celebrated 50 years in public education in 2013. An adjunct professor of education at Palm Beach State College, he writes articles for area newspapers and for his website, parentsmatter.info.

1970s

’72

Michael J. Poblocki ’72 & ’74G of Webster, Mass., wrote his first book, a fiction novel, French’s Redemption (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013). The book presents a sound factual theory behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

’77 

Charles S. “Budd” McEntee ’77 of Snellville, Ga., was named a senior station strategist at AR&D, a media strategy firm in Fort Worth, Texas. His focus is content, investigative reporting, and developing major stories. He is a veteran journalist and news director who formerly was vice president of news at Fox-owned WAGA in Atlanta.

1980s

’80

Jane L. Gonsalves ’80 of New Bedford, Mass., retired from the New Bedford City Council after 20 years of service. She chose not to run for re-election after winning election 10 times.

’81 

Stephen J. Cerrone ’81 of Chicago, Ill., was appointed executive vice president, human resources, at Hudson’s Bay Company, which operates Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor in the United States and retail stores in Canada. He brings more than 30 years of business experience to the company and formerly was executive vice president, human resources and communications, at Sara Lee Corporation.

Kevin M. Blake, Esq. ’82 of Ansonia, Conn., was appointed corporation counsel for the City of Derby. He recently completed a 14-year term as corporation counsel for the City of Ansonia. He is an attorney with Welch, Teodosio, Stanek & Blake, LLC of Shelton.

Robert E. Farrell, Jr. ’82 of Loganville, Pa., was named the director of academic affairs at Penn State York, a campus of The Pennsylvania State University. He is the chief academic officer of the campus and is responsible for all academic functions. An associate professor of biology, he has been a researcher in the area of transcriptional and post-transcriptional control of gene expression and is an expert in the area of RNA biology.

William J. Collier, III ’85 of Stamford, Conn., was named managing partner at Lindsey & Co., a retained executive search firm. He is based at the company’s headquarters in Darien. His 28-year career includes sales, marketing, and management roles. He also is co-owner of Sunny & Frankies Restaurant in Stamford.

Hon. Fred J. Anthony ’86 of Shelton, Conn., was elected president-elect of the National College of Probate Judges, the only national organization dedicated to the education of probate court judges and the improvement of probate courts. In November, he will be installed as president for 2014-15. Anthony was elected probate judge for the District of Shelton in 1994 and has been re-elected every four years since.  

Anne C. Ring ’86 of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., was appointed director of fund development and communications at the YMCA of Central & Northern Westchester in White Plains. She is a longtime community leader and the former president of Heritage Communications.

’87 

Martin S. Coleman ’87 of Drexel Hill, Pa., a shareholder with Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, was elected a Municipal Court judge of Philadelphia in the general election and has started a six-year term. Since joining Marshall Dennehey in 2008, he has focused on workers’ compensation, employment litigation, and civil rights matters. He has handled
approximately 500 workers’ compensation cases and, in the realm of employment litigation, has defended claims before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission.  

Michael T. Keegan ’87 of San Diego, Calif., was appointed executive vice president, U.S. sales, for Aurora Spine Corporation, a company that brings new solutions to the spinal implant market through minimally invasive, regenerative spinal implant technologies. He leads strategic sales development and sales administration and serves on the executive management team.

Joseph P. Pratt ’87 of Newport, R.I., was named executive director and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County. He formerly was chief of staff to Rhode Island Treasurer Gina Raimondo. He also has worked for Fidelity Investments, Bryant University, and the United Way of Southern New England.

Edward Broderick ’88G of North Kingstown, R.I., was promoted to president of Gilbane Development Company of Providence, the project development, financing, and ownership arm of Gilbane, Inc. Since joining the company in 1982, he has been executive vice president, senior vice president of development, and senior development manager, among other positions. 

Kathleen Burns Kingsbury ’88 of South Easton, Mass., was appointed to the CNBC Digital Financial Advisor Council, a group of 20 of the nation’s leading wealth managers and financial experts. She will write guest columns on CNBC.com and make on-air appearances on CNBC. She is founder of KBK Wealth Connection and has written books offering financial advice to women and couples.

’89 (25th Reunion Year)

Christopher D. Carusone, Esq. ’89 of Mechanicsburg, Pa., a partner with Conrad O’Brien PC and co-head of its Harrisburg office, addressed the Marcellus Shale Coalition — lawyers serving the coal and natural gas industries — about the status of criminal prosecutions under state environmental laws. A former chief deputy attorney general for Pennsylvania, he represents individuals, corporations, and other entities facing criminal and civil enforcement proceedings brought by the government.

Michael T. McCormack, Esq. ’89 of Hebron, Conn., a partner and a business litigation and insurance law attorney at Hinckley Allen in Hartford, was appointed by Gov. Dannel Malloy to serve on the State of Connecticut Insurance and Risk Management Board of Directors. The board protects the assets of the state through a comprehensive and cost-effective insurance and risk management program. 

Nancy T. Serpa ’89 of Newport, R.I., was named president of The Junior League of Rhode Island, Inc. and chairman of the board, where she has been a member since 2001. She is a director of program management at Fidelity Investments in Smithfield.

1990s

’90 

William J. Kearns, III ’90 of Annapolis, Md., a special education teacher at Meade Middle School in Fort Meade, wrote his third book, To the Bullies: Notes from the Impact Zone (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014). It contains poems written from the point of view of students he has known who have experienced bullying.

Shawn E. Palmer ’90 of Colchester, Conn., was named senior vice president, chief revenue officer, of the Record-Journal Publishing Company. In this newly created role, he oversees all print and digital revenue at The Record-Journal in Meriden, Conn., six weekly newspapers in central Connecticut, The Westerly Sun in Rhode Island, and four weeklies in southeastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island. He was previously publisher of The News-Times, a Hearst newspaper in Danbury, Conn.

Jeannemarie Conley ’91 of Boston, Mass., senior vice president at Otis & Ahearn Real Estate, was selected to share her expertise and insights on the real estate market in three Local Einsteins Boston publications. Local Einsteins is the largest publisher of local real estate books and is dedicated to publishing best-in-class content for home-buyers and home-sellers. She authored the first chapter in the “What to Know Before Buying or Selling a Home” series of books for Greater Boston, Back Bay/Beacon Hill, and the South End. Otis & Ahearn is the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in Boston and Brookline.

Kevin C. Leahy, C.P.A. ’93 of Durham, Conn., CEO and founder of Connecticut Wealth Management, LLC, was named a board member for the Rushford Center, one of Connecticut’s leading providers of addiction and mental health treatment programs for children, teens, and adults. He also will serve on the center’s Quality and Credentialing Committee.

’94 (20th Reunion Year)

Bruce A. Desrosiers, C.P.A. ’94SCE of Coventry, R.I., was promoted to tax director at BlumShapiro, an accounting, tax, and business consulting firm serving New England. He provides tax services to privately held businesses, individuals, trusts, and non-profit organizations. He is in his 20th year in public accounting, having started his career with Ernst & Young.

James A. Mello ’95 of Steubenville, Ohio, is the academic affairs business manager at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He recently attained a master of education degree in online instruction from Franciscan.

’96 

Christopher P. Murphy ’96 of Milton, Mass., was named senior vice president and head of the healthcare practice at Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications, a public relations and public affairs firm with offices in Boston and Washington, D.C. He formerly was vice president of media relations and primary spokesman for Steward Health Care System’s group of 11 hospitals.

Andrew C. Hodges ’98 of Salisbury, N.C., was appointed a member of the Teacher Advisory Committee, a new, 24-member group of teachers from across North Carolina organized by Gov. Pat McCrory. He is an advanced placement and honors English teacher at Gray Stone Day School,a public charter high school on the campus of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C.

Keith S. Varian ’98 of Fairfield, Conn., was elected a partner in Murtha Cullina LLP, a law firm with offices in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He has represented owners, investors, and developers of commercial real estate, and banks and other lending institutions in real estate-based financings and other forms of asset-based lending.

’99 (15th Reunion Year)

Kevin J. McNamara ’99 & ’05G of Greenville, R.I., the principal of Lincoln High School, was elected chairman of the Rhode Island Principals’ Committee on Athletics. The committee oversees the R.I. Interscholastic League. He has served on the committee since 2005.

Heather R. Rose-Glowacki ’99 of Burke, Va., was promoted to director, chemical and industry dynamics, at the American Chemistry Council in Washington, D.C. The council is the nation’s oldest trade association, representing companies engaged in the business of chemistry. 

2000s

’04 (10th Reunion Year)

Stefanie D. Blankenship ’04 of Warwick, R.I., was appointed head librarian of the Oak Lawn Branch of the Cranston Public Library. She manages daily operations and oversees staff, programming, collection, and community partnerships with the neighborhood. She previously worked for eight years at the Auburn Branch, where her accomplishments included implementing innovative teen programming. 

James R. Palmieri ’04 of Long Branch, N.J., earned his doctor of education degree in educational administration and supervision from Rutgers University. His dissertation was titled: “21st Century Girls’ Schools: For What Reasons are New Independent Girls’ Schools Opening in the United States?” He serves as assistant head of school at Trinity Hall, an all-girls high school in Monmouth County, N.J. 

Timothy W. Zajac ’04 of Cincinnati, Ohio, joined the Dominican Novitiate of the Province of St. Joseph and is residing with the Dominican Community at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati. He has taken the religious name Jordan. Formerly of New Bedford, Mass., he earned a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Michelle A. (Jarvis) Michaud ’06 of Hilton Head Island, S.C., graduated with an MBA degree from the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. She has launched Pink Bubbly, an online jewelry shop offering statement necklaces, colorful bracelets, sparkly studs, and monogramming. She is also blogging (Pink Champagne), modeling, and writing about fashion for several online publications.

Kate Moccia Colombo ’07 of Peabody, Mass., was named planning coordinator for Tocci Building Companies of Waltham. She assists with the coordination of subcontractors on projects by updating the database, tracking and distributing bids, and distributing planning schedules. 

Meaghan C. Keane ’07, formerly of Fairfield, Conn., accepted a position as a pediatric surgical and transplant nurse at the King Faisal Hospital and Specialist Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 

’09 (5th Reunion Year) 

Nora S. Yousif  ’09 of Boston, Mass., a financial advisor with RBC Wealth Management who specializes in personal finance and education, is the host of the popular “Wine & Wall Street” series in Greater Boston. She speaks on various financial topics at national conventions, including at the Boston Convention Center again this summer; writes personal finance articles for local columns, including Beauty & The Bull magazine; has contributed to Huffington Post Live and the Money Matters radio show; and hosts the Five-Minute Financial News Flash program that airs on Easton Community Access Television. She is a member of PC’s Boston alumni group, two non-profit boards, and organizes programs for Babson College’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.
