In Memoriam: Dr. John J. Breen, Jr. ’47 & ’58Hon.; professor emeritus

Dr. John J. Breen, Jr. ’47 & ’58Hon., of Providence, professor emeritus of business administration who taught at Providence College from 1947 to 1993, died on June 19.

A World War II veteran, he joined the PC faculty as instructor of business administration and was promoted three times, including to professor of business administration in 1959. Dr. Breen served as department chair from 1966 to 1972. He was awarded an honorary master of arts degree by the College in 1958 for his teaching and scholarship.

Dr. Breen, who also held degrees from Columbia University and Clark University, remained keenly interested in the College for many years after his retirement from the faculty. He frequently attended campus lectures and presentations and visited with colleagues.

In his retirement, he also was a discussion leader at Hamilton House, an adult learning center, in Providence.

Dr. Breen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan M. (Bruneau) Breen; his sons, Dr. John J. “Jack” Breen III ’81, PC associate professor of chemistry, and Peter W. Breen ’90; his daughter, Dr. Ellen C. Breen ’85; and five grandchildren.

His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Augustine Church, Providence.
