In Memoriam: Paul E. Vorro ’69; retired lecturer in Graduate Education Program

IM-vorro,-paul-V1Paul E. Vorro ’69, a longtime special lecturer in the Graduate Educate Program at the College, died on May 14, 2015, in Providence.

Education was a lifelong vocation for Mr. Vorro, who served at several levels in the Providence and North Providence school systems during the course of a 45-year career. For 22 of those years, until 2014, he taught at night and on Saturdays in the Graduate Education Program at PC, where he had attained a bachelor’s degree in education/social studies.

Mr. Vorro taught the Supervision of Instruction course during the fall, spring, and summer sessions. A core course for administrators, it attracted a wide expanse of educators, including curriculum and counseling directors, principals, and superintendents.

“Paul was a wonderful educator, a classy guy. He was loved by his colleagues. He always had a good word to say about everyone,” said Francis J. Leary, director of the Graduate Education Program.

Mr. Vorro began his career as a teacher in the Providence School System. He also served in Providence as a guidance counselor, principal, dean of students, and as deputy superintendent. He left Providence to become superintendent of North Providence Public Schools. He also was the executive director of the Providence Teachers Union for 11 years until retiring in 2014.

He received many awards and honors for his contributions to education during his career, including a key to the Town of North Providence.

Mr. Vorro was the husband of Colleen (Goralski) Vorro ’75G. He also is survived by a son, Matthew Vorro; a daughter, Deana Vorro; three grandchildren; and a brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Vorro was celebrated in St. Clement Church, Warwick, R.I.
