Soccer team kicks its way to NCAAs

AF-soccerUnder second-year Head Coach Craig Stewart, the Friars’ men’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years this past fall. PC, ranked nationally as high as 23rd, finished with a 12-6-4 record. The Friars were selected to the NCAAs after winning two contests in the BIG EAST tourney and advancing to the championship game, losing, 3-2, to Marquette. After a tough win — decided on penalty kicks — at Pennsylvania in the first round of the NCAAs, PC was edged in the second round at Maryland, 3-1. The Friars were led in scoring by Julian Gressel ’17 (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany), seen above against Maryland. A Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection, he finished his freshman season with five goals and four assists.

Members of the storied 1993 Providence College women’s soccer team returned to PC in October for a celebration of the 20-year anniversary of their BIG EAST Championship. Joined by family and friends, the team was honored at halftime of a game against St.John’s. Coached by Nicole Crepeau and led by tournament MVP Jennifer Mead ’94, the 1993 team beat former BIG EAST rivals Boston College and Connecticut en route to the league championship.
