Tropical Biology in Belize

Students in the Department of Biology’s Introduction to Tropical Biology course traveled to Belize over Easter break to experience the tropics firsthand and to conduct small research projects.
At Blue Creek, a field station in a rainforest preserve, students enjoyed hikes, adventures in both wet and dry caves, zip-lining, tropical river tubing, and learning about Mayan culture. At South Water Caye, located in a marine reserve on the Belize Barrier Reef, students gathered data on a variety of topics including reef squid behavior, damselfish territoriality, ecology of bioluminescent worms, and movement of upside-down jellyfish.
Students are analyzing data from their research now that they have returned to campus.
