Dr. Christine E. Earley, professor of accountancy and associate dean of the School of Business, was nearly an English major in college before switching to accountancy. So when she heard that business professors were being sought to teach in the Development of Western Civilization Program, “I knew in my heart I had to take part,” she said.

Earley taught The Ideology of Crisis with Rev. R. Gabriel Pivarnik, O.P., assistant professor of theology and vice president for mission and ministry. The colloquium explores how people have responded to crises through history and the trends that have resulted.

“It’s a wonderful balance of history, economics, and human nature through the lenses of different authors, artists, and economists,” said Brian O’Reilly ’16 (Lincoln, R.I.), a social work major. “It’s kept me intrigued through the professors, for the interesting history learned, and for the engaging and interactive learning that happens inside and outside the classroom. Observable human behavior interests me the most, and that’s what this class is all about.”
