In memoriam: Dr. George R. Healy ’49

Dr. George R. Healy ’49, who led parasitic disease research at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), died March 2 of complications from emphysema. Dr. Healy, who served in the Army Air Corps and attended PC on the G.I. Bill, was inspired as a preteen to become a parasitologist. Dr. Healy was one of the first six scientists hired by the CDC, then known as the Communicable Diseases Center. In a career that spanned more than three decades, he worked with labs around the world, specializing in one-celled organisms that caused disease in humans. Dr. Healy is survived by his wife, Shirley Healy; his daughter, Carolyn; and sisters Eileen Rogers and Sheila Keene.
