Pressbox: A Friar all the way

Edwin P. Palumbo ’50, and his wife, Muriel

Edwin P. Palumbo ’50, pictured with his wife, Muriel, was presented a framed basketball jersey in honor of his long-time support for the PC’s men’s basketball team. A season ticket-holder for more than 40 years, Palumbo was honored at a home game in February. An instructor of economics who is scheduled to retire this June after teaching at PC for more than 50 years, he also has been an active alumnus.

Friar lacrosse captain Andrew Barton ’14 (Timonium, Md.) was selected by the Florida Launch in the 7th round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft in January. The midfielder was the Friars’ second-leading scorer as a junior, with 27 goals and a team-high 18 assists. He became the 21st PC lacrosse player to score 100 career points with an assist against Villanova last April.

The 2014 USA Basketball Men’s Under 18 Team coaching staff will have a decidedly Providence College flavor, as Friar Head Coach Ed Cooley was tapped to serve as an assistant under University of Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan, a 1987 PC graduate. The team, which will be selected in June, will compete in the FIBA America U18 Championship against teams from seven other Western Hemisphere countries. University of Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller rounds out the staff.
