Kevin M. Murray; former Friars’ lacrosse head coach
Kevin M. Murray, a legendary figure in Rhode Island lacrosse and a former head coach at PC, died Feb. 3, 2018.
Mr. Murray coached the Friars from 1988-1995, leading the team to 43 victories. He was the head coach at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick at the time of his death and led the Hawks to five state championships. He previously served as head coach at La Salle Academy. In addition, Mr. Murray said he was honored to serve as a coach of the Boys National High School All-Star Showcase team and the Men’s Division I College North-South All-Star Game.
Above all, he was respected for the influence he had on countless young men he coached and for his hard-working, competitive approach to the sport as a player, teammate, and coach.
Born in Providence, Mr. Murray attended La Salle Academy, where he was captain of the lacrosse team and was named to all-state and all-New England teams. He went on to play on nationally ranked teams at Long Island University-C.W. Post University.
Mr. Murray was an elementary school teacher in Woonsocket for the past 17 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen M. (McKenna) Murray; five children, Sean Murray, Alice Zossou, Daniel Murray, Michael Murray, and Jake Murray; his mother, Carolyn M. (McCabe) Murray; two brothers, Steven D. Murray and Joseph E. Murray, Jr.; and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Murray was celebrated on Feb. 8 in St. Margaret Church, Rumford. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
