Paul J. Shanley; brother of PC President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80
Paul J. Shanley of Warwick, R.I., the twin brother of College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80, died Aug. 19, 2019.
Mr. Shanley was the son of the late Joseph V. Shanley ’49 and Elaine (McNerney) Shanley, who was the head cataloger at the College’s Phillips Memorial Library for 25 years.
Mr. Shanley spent most of his career in law enforcement, serving 26 years with the Warwick Police Department and attaining the rank of captain. Following his retirement, he assumed the role of deputy chief of police for the Brown University Department of Public Safety, a position he held until his death.
Mr. Shanley received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration from Roger Williams University. He was an active member of St. Gregory the Great Parish in Warwick where he served as a Eucharistic minister and president of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Shanley is survived by his wife, Patti; four children, including Evan P. Shanley ’09 and Meaghan Shanley ’19SCE; a grandson; and four siblings, including Father Shanley.
Father Shanley was the principal celebrant at a Mass of Christian Burial for his brother on Aug. 23 in St. Gregory the Great Church. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
