In Memoriam: John J. Mahoney, Esq. ’65; former PC trustee, civic-minded attorney
John “Jack” J. Mahoney, Esq. ’65, a former Providence College trustee and a longtime Washington, D.C.-based attorney, died on Dec. 12, 2019.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Mahoney received his bachelor’s degree from PC before earning a master’s degree from St. Stephen’s College in Dover, Mass., and his juris doctorate from The Catholic University of America Law School.

He maintained strong ties to PC throughout his life, giving his time and resources freely. He served on the Board of Trustees from 2002-2010. A member of the Harkins Society, one of the College’s top giving societies, Mr. Mahoney was the lead sponsor of the annual PC in DC Program, which exposes undergraduates to the careers of alumni in leadership positions.
He frequently hosted events for alumni and students, and he advocated to get more students from the D.C. area to attend PC and for more alumni to work in Washington. He was a big fan of Friars basketball and, in 2015, served on his class’ 50th reunion committee.
Over his long and successful legal career, Mr. Mahoney practiced real estate law in the D.C. area. He founded the private firm Mahoney, Gitner & Zentz, located on Capitol Hill. The hill was also the location for the title company he founded, Attorneys Title Corporation, and Regional Title. He also served as president of the National Title Network and director of the National Capital Development Corporation.
Extremely civic minded, Mr. Mahoney found a way to combine that passion with his love for sports. He served as the commissioner and interim chair of the D.C. Sports & Entertainment Commission. The organization was instrumental in attracting Major League Baseball’s return to Washington, D.C., in the form of the Washington Nationals.
Additionally, he co-founded and was director and president of the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals. For his dedication and service to the community, Mr. Mahoney received the Capitol Hill Community Achievement Award. He was also a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, Washington Association of Realtors, Economic Club of Washington, City Club of Washington, and various regional title associations.
Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife, Angela; siblings Mike Mahoney, Judy Bangert, Patti Caudill, Sharon Blackburn, Jeanne Mantle, Diane Weaver, and Linda McVey; a sister-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Dec. 27 at St. Patrick Church, Washington, D.C.
