A Message of Solidarity with Ukraine
Like so many of you, I’ve been consumed by the heartbreaking stories coming from Ukraine. We’ve seen hundreds of lives lost, including children and those working to provide medical and humanitarian relief to those who are suffering. We’ve seen untold numbers of people forced to flee their beloved homeland to live as refugees, uncertain when they’ll be able to return to their homes and what they might find when they do. And the tragic violence is likely to get worse in the days and weeks to come.
At the same time, we’ve been moved and inspired by images of proud Ukrainian people who are defending their cities and towns against their Russian aggressors. In the face of overwhelming odds and at the risk of their lives, brave men and women are taking up arms and fighting in any way they can, confident in the righteousness of their cause. We’ve seen Russian citizens protesting in the streets of Moscow and calling for justice, knowing that their defiance might land them in prison for years. We’ve seen similar protests in cities around the world as millions of people urgently demand justice and peace.
As we enter the holy season of Lent, I encourage all members of the Providence College community to express their solidarity with the people of Ukraine. As a Catholic and Dominican college, we know the spiritual power of prayer, fasting, and penance. As Pope Francis says, these are God’s weapons against the diabolical senselessness of violence. Let us make good use of these forty days, begging God to bring peace and justice to Ukraine and all of the people who call that nation their home.
