Providence College remembers Pope Francis

Statement on Pope Francis’ life and legacy from President Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard, O.P. ’78, ’82G:

I invite all in the Providence College community to join me in prayer and remembrance as we reflect upon the life and legacy of His Holiness, Pope Francis. A Jesuit pastor who was a living example of Jesus’ command that we minister with love to the least among us, he brought the message of the Gospel to life in our time and spent his remarkable pontificate in loving service to others. Pope Francis was a compelling preacher, a tireless pilgrim, and a compassionate shepherd who served the Church and fought injustice, creating hope in the hearts of all to whom he ministered. As a strong advocate for the poor, he once said, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty!” Francis left the throne of St. Peter in the same way he ascended to it — as a witness to the dignity of human life and the beauty of creation. Always an ambassador of peace and a champion of human rights, he reshaped our world. May he rest in peace, and may he be joined to the Communion of Saints.
