Susan Esper ’91 leads with purpose as the first female chair of the Board of Trustees

Susan Svitila Esper ’91, a partner at Deloitte and the mother of two Friars, Victoria Esper Laraia ’19 and Olivia Esper ’22, ’23G, is the first woman to chair the Providence College Board of Trustees. She was interviewed for the Providence College Podcast by Bridget E. Anthony ’22, ’23G, assistant director of digital and social media in the Division of Marketing and Communications.

As Providence College begins Women’s History Month, Susan Esper ’91 returns to campus not just as a graduate, but as a leader helping to guide the institution’s future.

In this episode of the Providence College Podcast with Bridget E. Anthony ’22, ’23G, Esper shares a thoughtful conversation about her journey — from her student experience in Friartown to her professional path in Boston and, ultimately, to her historic role as the first woman to chair the College’s Board of Trustees.

Esper reflects on the mentors who shaped her, the unexpected turns in her career, and the responsibility that comes with stewarding an institution that played such a formative role in her life. She also offers insight into the Board of Trustees’ work and the collaborative leadership that shapes Providence College’s strategic direction.

Grounded in service and guided by purpose, Esper’s story is a reminder that leadership is often built quietly — through consistency, conviction, and a commitment to community.

“Any time I was a first, I was super mindful that people were watching … you have to open doors and show others what’s possible.”
