Mrs. Canavan’s profound dedication to improving lives is evident in her support for the Kate Foundation for Rett Syndrome Research, named for her granddaughter. Since its founding in 2009, the nonprofit has raised more than $900,000 to fund scientific research seeking the reversal of Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting girls. She has co-hosted the foundation’s biennial gala fundraiser and actively promotes awareness and research about the disease.

With her husband, a college trustee from 2005-2015, Mrs. Canavan has been a longstanding philanthropic partner with the college. In 2007, the couple provided the lead gift to construct the Canavan Sports Medicine Center in Alumni Hall. Ten years later, they made a long-term commitment for sports medicine-related resources to target the physical and psychological well-being of student-athletes. It doubled the size of the center and helped outfit the athletics innovation lab in the Ruane Friar Development Center.

Mrs. Canavan has been an active participant in college events and donor recognition programs. The M. Joseph and MaryBeth Canavan Scholarship Fund, established in 1986, was established to benefit female student-athletes. The Canavan Family Fund in Medical Ethics allows the Department of Health Sciences to present an annual undergraduate conference on health and society. It is planned and produced by students, supported by faculty, and features academic paper presentations by students and their peers from local and regional colleges.

Mrs. Canavan is a native of New Haven and studied at Quinnipiac University. She has been an award-winning Realtor on the Connecticut shoreline for more than 30 years. She is a board member of the Mary Wade Home, a skilled nursing facility in New Haven, and helped organize its fundraisers and capital campaigns during the past 16 years. In recognition of her community contributions, she was chosen by the New Haven Club of Providence College to receive its prestigious Veritas Award in 2024.

Mrs. Canavan resides in Branford, Connecticut, and is a member of St. John Bosco Parish. She is the mother of three, including Traci E. Canavan ’89, and has four grandchildren.
