A Message from Father Sicard

A Message from Father Sicard
Dear Providence College community,
Higher education stands at an inflection point. Across the nation, institutions of all sizes are navigating an environment marked by growing constraints and intensifying scrutiny.
This moment is characterized by seemingly formidable — and often paradoxical — circumstances: the pressure of increasing enrollment amid demographic downturns, the need to rapidly innovate while remaining steadfast in enduring academic traditions, and the imperative to prepare young people for careers not yet imagined in a world changing at unprecedented speed. Some ask, what is the real purpose of higher education? What is its future?
As I reflect on these questions and the state of higher education at large, one conviction becomes increasingly clear: the world needs Providence College now more than ever — not despite these challenges, but because of them.
A Providence College education, grounded in Catholic faith and guided by the Dominican charism, stands apart — not only for our students and graduates, but also for the families, workplaces, and communities they go on to shape. Ours is an education that prepares young people for professional success and lifelong purpose. That mission continues today just as it has for more than a century.
If the defining question facing higher education is whether its value still endures, then the thousands of alumni, parents, and friends who are investing in Beyond Limits: The Campaign for Providence College offer a resounding answer.
Already, the impact of Beyond Limits can be seen and felt across our campus. From increased scholarship support, to investments in new wellness programming, to resources that have launched new academic majors and bolstered our competitive advantage in athletics, this campaign is helping Providence College meet today’s challenges while preparing boldly for tomorrow. Each gift is more than a contribution; it is a belief in our mission and a vote of confidence in our future. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Providence College’s best days are ahead. We have so much more to accomplish. With continued support through Beyond Limits, we can ensure that Providence College is prepared not merely to meet the future, but to shape it.
As we welcome the Class of 2030 to campus, I wish all members of the Friar family a safe, productive, and inspiring start to the academic year. May God’s providence continue to guide and bless our community.
Sincerely,
Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard, O.P. ’78, ’82G
College President
