Development of Western Civilization colloquia for Spring 2020
Second-semester sophomores enrolled in the Development of Western Civilization colloquium titled “APOCALYPSE” had no idea how timely their discussions would become.
In the course, co-taught by Dr. Vance Morgan, professor of philosophy, and Dr. Robert Stretter, associate professor of English, students examine Biblical apocalyptic texts such as Daniel and Revelation and the theology of “the Rapture” in evangelical Christianity as well as novels, films, and comics about nuclear war and natural disaster.
The fourth semester of the Development of Western Civilization Program consists of a team-taught, four-credit colloquium. Students choose from a variety of colloquia according to their interests. Building upon the first three semesters, the advanced colloquium focuses on a specific, contemporary issue in the context of the western tradition. Colloquia seek to extend the interdisciplinary approach beyond the humanities (natural science, social science, education, and business), and relate Western history and culture to the histories and cultures beyond the West.
