Daniel A. Rigney, Jr. ’58, who helped found the Mal Brown Club, a basketball booster organization that became the Greater Providence Club of the Providence College National Alumni Association, died on September 1, 2013. He was the husband of Kathleen Donnelly Rigney and a longtime resident of Narragansett, R.I.

Mr. Rigney entered PC after his graduation from nearby La Salle Academy and studied business management. He worked in his father’s ice cream store before beginning a career in insurance that led to work in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

An ardent fan of Friars basketball, he remained an active member of the Mal Brown Club as it evolved into an alumni organization. He was instrumental in a campaign to raise money for a headstone for the gravesite of the club’s namesake, Malcolm “Mal” Brown ’33, in Amherst, Mass., and attended the Mass in St. Dominic Chapel during which the headstone was dedicated in 2011.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Rigney is survived by six children, Daniel A., Thomas A., George, and Matthew Rigney, Mary Kay Diakite, and Christen Herzog; a sister, Helen Reall; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on September 7 in St. Veronica Chapel, Narragansett.
