In Memoriam: David M. Carberry, M.D. ’47; former N.Y. Alumni Club president

David M. Carberry, M.D. ’47 of Pelham, N.Y., a former president of the PC National Alumni Association’s (NAA) New York Club, died on April 17.

A member of the Friars’ men’s basketball team as an undergraduate, Dr. Carberry remained close to his alma mater throughout the decades. In addition to his leadership of the New York Alumni Club, he attended many alumni events, including his 60th class reunion in 2007. He was a recipient of the NAA’s Faithful Friar Award in 1987.

A retired chief of thoracic surgery at Harlem Hospital, he practiced surgery in Manhattan for more than 40 years. Dr. Carberry held long-standing surgical appointments at Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. During the Carter administration, he was designated thoracic surgeon-on-call for presidential visits to New York City, and he served as in-house physician for Rockefeller Center.

Dr. Carberry graduated from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia in 1951. During World War II, he fought with Gen. George S. Patton’s Third Army and was awarded two Bronze Stars for acts of heroism in the Battle of the Bulge.

Dr. Carberry was the husband of the late Joan Carberry, to whom he was married 55 years. He is survived by four children, including Marcella J. Carberry ’89, and three grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of St. Catharine in Pelham.
