IN MEMORIAM: John R. King, Jr.
John R. King, Jr., a retired associate professor of mathematics who taught at Providence College for 53 years, died October 8, 2013. He was the husband of Maureen (Foley) King and resided in Harmony, R.I.
Mr. King was appointed an instructor in mathematics in 1957 during a leave of absence from his job as an engineer with General Dynamics. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1959 and associate professor in 1963, and also served as department chair. In the early 1980s, he was faculty representative to the Providence College Corporation.
Mr. King’s years at PC saw the arrival of computers on campus, which he called “an exciting era. Instead of always beginning (a class) at page one of a calculus book, here was something new to get into.”
Following his graduation from Woonsocket High School, Mr. King received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1951. From 1951-1953, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He also received a master’s degree from Boston College in 1957.
In addition to his wife, Mr. King leaves a son, Sean F. King of Harmony, and a daughter, Jennifer M. King of Brighton, Mass.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on October 11 in St. Philip Church, Greenville.
