In Memoriam: Joseph A. Caffey, Sr. ’74; loyal alumnus, affordable housing advocate

caffey-joseph-74Joseph A. Caffey, Sr. ’74, a devoted alumnus who was considered one of New England’s top affordable housing advocates, died on June 8, 2015.

Mr. Caffey remained close to his alma mater over the years, participating in many multicultural and career programs at the College. In March, he was a panelist in the first Alumni of Color Panel, Discussion, and Networking Event for student scholarship recipients.

He also was a member of the National Alumni Association Council for three years and served on PC’s Providence President’s Council.

Mr. Caffey was the president and chief executive officer of Providence-based Omni Development Corporation, which develops affordable housing. A tireless advocate of housing for the underprivileged, he was the former director of housing rehabilitation for the City of Providence and was the president of the National Leased Housing Association, based in Washington, D.C.

A lifelong resident of Providence, Mr. Caffey was known for his quick wit and passion for local and national politics. He was a keen political observer and participant in campaigns.

Mr. Caffey was the father of Joseph A. Caffey, Jr. and his wife, Keila. He also is survived by four grandchildren and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Providence.
