Thomas J. Martin III ’78 of North Providence, R.I., coached the La Salle Academy girls’ tennis team to the Rhode Island Division I Championship for the fourth consecutive year in 2017. He has led the Rams to eight state championships in his 31 years as head coach.

Martin joined the La Salle faculty in 1989 as a history/social studies teacher and has served as vice principal of student life since 2008. He was named the 2017-18 Distinguished Lasallian Educator at La Salle. Located less than a mile from PC, La Salle is a coeducational, Catholic school for students in middle school through high school and is run by the De La Salle Christian Brothers.

Martin is pictured with one of his former student-athletes, Natalie Pitocco ’20, who now plays for the Friars’ women’s tennis team. Pitocco was a four-time all-state and all-division player at La Salle and was a member of the Rams’ state championship teams in 2012, 2014, and 2015. She served as a co-captain her senior year. Natalie is the sister of Amanda Pitocco ’17, who played tennis for the Friars and whom Martin also coached at La Salle.
