Friars Forward: Empowering Athletes Through NIL and Revenue Sharing

In the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, Providence College has emerged as a proactive leader in supporting student-athletes through Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) and Revenue Sharing. The administration, led by College President Rev. Kenneth Sicard, O.P., ’78, ’82G, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business/Chief Financial Officer John Sweeney, and Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Napolillo ’98, has positioned the school to operate competitively in this new landscape.

Prior to the recent House Settlement going into effect on July 1, 2025 — which now allows schools to directly share revenue with student-athletes — Providence College was already leading the way through the Friar Family Collective. Officially launched on July 1, 2021, with the NCAA’s interim NIL policy, the Collective strives to help student-athletes legally monetize their personal brands through individual and business contributions. This was done in alignment with PC Athletics’ mission to build champion citizens, scholars, and athletes.

With the House Settlement now approved, donors to the Friar Family Collective can give directly to Providence College. These gifts are 100% tax deductible and can be directed to revenue share-restricted accounts for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s cross country and track.

Following the settlement’s approval, federal efforts have accelerated to clarify and standardize NIL and revenue sharing. On July 10, the bipartisan SCORE Act was introduced in the U.S. House, proposing antitrust protections, blocking employee status for student-athletes, standardizing NIL rules across states, and requiring schools to maintain at least 16 varsity teams. On July 24, President Trump signed the “Saving College Sports” executive order, outlining directives to protect Title IX, prohibit third-party “pay-for-play” deals, and review employment status — offering further structure to a rapidly evolving space.

Providence College remains deeply committed to championing the success of its student-athletes — on the field, in the classroom, and beyond. By embracing revenue sharing and NIL with integrity and innovation, PC is not only adapting to the future of collegiate athletics — but helping shape it. The support of the Friar community will help Providence College lead in this new era of college athletics.
