Panel Presentation on Global Health and Human Rights
This dynamic lecture series, which has brought to Providence College Msgr. Timothy Verdon, Rev. James Martin, SJ and Professor Danielle Allen, concludes next month with a discussion of urgent issues affecting people around the world. A panel of three leading experts, including Dr. Robert Gallo, one of PC’s most prominent alumni, will share insights on the role of research in addressing matters of global health, along with the challenges related to managing those issues on a large scale. Dr. Charles Toth of the Biology faculty and Dr. Tuba Agartan of the Health Policy and Management faculty will moderate the discussion and add the PC scholarly perspective.
Panel speakers include:
Paul Farmer, M.D.: Co-founder of the international social justice and health organization Partners in Health; Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard University
Robert Gallo ’59, M.D.: biomedical researcher and co-discoverer of the HIV; co-founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology at University of Maryland School of Medicine; co-founder and scientific director of the Global Virus Network.
Jennie Weiss Block, T.O.P., D. Min.: chief advisor to Dr. Farmer since 2009 and his chief of staff in his role as UN Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti under President Clinton.
