Providence College honored as top producer of Fulbright students for second straight year
By Vicki-Ann Downing
Providence College has been named a top producer of Fulbright students for the second consecutive year.

The honor was acknowledged this month in The Chronicle of Higher Education. PC was listed in the master’s category of colleges and universities that produced the most students for the competitive Fulbright U.S. Students Program, which awards fellowships to graduating college seniors, graduate students, professionals, and artists to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.
Four PC students were awarded Fulbright Teaching Assistantships for the 2020-21 academic year, the most in any single year at the College:
- Dylan Black ’20, a mathematics major and economics minor from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., was awarded a Fulbright to teach in the Czech Republic. Due to the prevalence of the coronavirus in that country, his placement was deferred to August 2021.
- Nicole Gottlieb ’20, an elementary and special education major from Nantucket, Mass., was awarded a Fulbright to teach in Indonesia. Instead, she chose to become an international teacher in Uganda.
- Krista Minniti ’20, a political science and Spanish double major from Madison, Conn., was selected as an alternate for a placement in Spain but was offered a Fulbright in November. She arrived in Madrid in January to begin a year of teaching while continuing her studies remotely at the University of Connecticut School of Law.
- Jack Murphy ’20, a social work and Spanish double major from Brunswick, Maine, was awarded a Fulbright to teach in Paraguay. He arrived in January and began teaching after 14 days in quarantine and a period of orientation.

The Center for Engaged Learning oversees the Fulbright program at PC. Dr. Darra Mulderry, the center’s associate director and director of national and international fellowships and scholarships, said it was an honor for the College to be recognized for the second year. In 2019, three students were awarded Fulbrights.
“I am so proud of our applicants,” Mulderry said. “Interest in a Fulbright year as a U.S. cultural ambassador remains high among our graduating seniors and recent alumni. I am particularly thrilled that for the first time ever, our Fulbright finalists were offered grants on three continents: Europe, South America, and Asia.”
The Fulbright Program, the flagship international program of the U.S. government, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2021. Mulderry encouraged students and recent graduates who are interested in the Fulbright program to email her at mulderry@providence.edu.
