Providence College joyfully marks the 25th anniversary of St. Dominic Chapel, a sacred space dedicated to prayer, reflection, and community. Since its blessing in 2001, the chapel has stood as a spiritual heart for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, fostering faith and connection. This milestone invites us to celebrate its enduring legacy and the countless moments of grace experienced within its walls, enduring testimony to the college’s Dominican traditions and commitment to Catholic values.
Alumni and friends are invited to join the PC community in prayerful celebration at the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, February 1. Following Mass, you are invited to join us for a light reception to continue the celebration. Advance registration is required.

POPE FRANCIS
Providence College Campus Ministry, the college’s largest student organization, offers vibrant opportunities for students to grow in their faith and build community. From coordinating liturgical ministries to performing in liturgical choirs, students are deeply involved in spiritual life on campus. A highlight of the week is the beloved “Last Chance Mass” at 10 p.m. on Sundays, drawing a packed chapel and followed by the lively Post-Mass Bash in the Campus Ministry Center. Whether through worship, service, or fellowship, Campus Ministry empowers students to lead, reflect, and celebrate their faith in meaningful and memorable ways.

St. Dominic Chapel, Providence College’s primary worship space, exemplifies the college’s enduring faith and vision. Dedicated on February 2, 2001, it fulfilled a dream for a single, large campus worship space first expressed by the college’s founders 84 years earlier. Designed by Keefe Associates of Boston, the chapel blends Neo-Romanesque architecture with contemporary finishes across a 20,000-square-foot floor plan that accommodates 600 worshipers. Its notable features include a grand pipe organ comprising 2,289 pipes, a gilded tabernacle, and 45 stunning stained-glass windows. Made possible by the generosity of many donors, St. Dominic Chapel continues to inspire and invite the campus community to join in prayer, reflection, and celebration.
WAR MEMORIAL GROTTO

Providence College’s War Memorial Grotto of Our Lady of the Rosary stands as a solemn tribute to the 68 alumni who gave their lives in World War II. Dedicated on May 9, 1948, the grotto was originally constructed from 600 tons of local fieldstone, 40 tons of steel reinforcing rod, and 400 yards of cement. For decades, it served as an outdoor chapel and a cherished site for religious services, commencements, and community gatherings. Reconstructed at the turn of the century at one third its original size, it now anchors a 5,000-square-foot stone courtyard north of St. Dominic Chapel, preserving its original statuary and other features that animate its sacred presence.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
Providence College’s St. Dominic Chapel is adorned with 45 breathtaking stained glass windows that illuminate its sacred space with beauty and meaning. Composed of approximately 6,000 individual pieces of glass and depicting more than 130 human figures, these windows portray the life of St. Dominic, the impact of the Order of Preachers throughout history, pivotal events in the life of Jesus, and a majestic image of Christ enthroned. Designed by acclaimed stained-glass artist Sylvia Nicolas ’01Hon., each window is a visual sermon, inviting reflection and awe. Together, they form a radiant tapestry that inspires faith and deepens the spiritual experience of all who enter.

St. Dominic Chapel at Providence College is the spiritual heart of campus, enlivened through the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program that invites students to receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation milestones on their journey of personal and spiritual growth. This growth is a vital part of the college’s mission to form individuals in faith and truth. Through these sacraments, students are welcomed into a vibrant faith-life community that thrives on invitation and shared purpose. Each year, the chapel also serves as a sacred space of lifelong commitment, as several alumni return to be joined in marriage. A powerful moment in the chapel’s history came in 2021, when Rev. Jordan Zajac, O.P. ’04 was ordained to the priesthood during the COVID-19 pandemic, amplifying the chapel’s enduring role in spiritual formation.

Providence College’s worship spaces have mirrored the institution’s growth, reflecting the enduring importance of spiritual life in the student experience. The journey began with a modest chapel on the first floor of Harkins Hall, serving the college’s original 71 students. In 1939, the Aquinas Hall chapel was dedicated, offering seating for 180 and expanding the college’s capacity for communal worship. Today, St. Dominic Chapel stands as the spiritual center of campus, embodying the college’s mission to foster personal and spiritual development. These and other sacred spaces, including the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in St. Thomas Aquinas Priory and the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel at the Ben Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences, are essential to student formation, nurturing faith and community across generations.
