Statement of Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 on expansion of the BIG EAST Conference
“Today marks a milestone moment in the continuing evolution of the BIG EAST Conference as a national power in collegiate athletics in general and basketball in particular. The BIG EAST announced today that it is expanding to 11 teams by welcoming the University of Connecticut back to full membership. The announcement at Madison Square Garden is a reminder of the rich history that the conference has at that venue, and of the value that the storied UConn program adds to the national profile of the conference. We believe that the return of UConn to the BIG EAST will be a blessing to our student-athletes, our fans, and all our supporters.”
