Student researchers work to develop low-cost, shelf-stable COVID vaccine

Rev. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P. ’20G, professor of biology and of theology, planned to spend a sabbatical year at the University of Santo Thomas in the Philippines. But when that country locked down while he was visiting during spring break in 2020, he started working on COVID disease modeling for metro Manila. Watch the video to see how student researchers Taylor Brysgel ’22 and Noah Kozub ’22 are contributing to his College-funded project to develop a shelf-stable, oral vaccine for developing nations. Hear him discuss his unexpected foray into public health on the Providence College Podcast. And read his Crux interview on the American Catholic Church debate about the morality of COVID-19 vaccines is affecting efforts to vaccinate Catholics around the world, and a Providence College Magazine profile on this MIT-educated molecular biologist and bioethicist.
