Incoming Class of 2022 students representing four programs united to take part in the first Joint Day of Service on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Three hundred students, including upper-class mentors, cleaned and prepared the classrooms, hallways, and grounds of the nearby Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School for the start of the Providence public school’s academic year.

The students were members of one of four groups: Urban Action, FaithWorks, the Multicultural and First Generation Student Transitions Program, and the International Student Welcome Program. The groups traditionally have conducted their own programming prior to the start of the academic year to ease and enhance the transition to college life but joined for the first time for a community service project.

“We’ve never done anything like this. We decided to coordinate the groups to help students meet and get to know each other better. We also wanted to form a sense of community among them and start building the understanding that this is what the College is about,” said Heidi Fraitzl ’14, campus minister, who coordinates FaithWorks.

In anticipation of the Joint Day of Service, the four groups gathered with student leaders of the New Student Orientation Program for a barbecue on Slavin Lawn on Sunday, Aug. 19.

Following the service day, all the students were invited to dinner and to take part in a series of Olympic-type games on campus.
